The Greater Tuckahoe Area Merchants’ Association presented scholarship awards to 7 students from the Greater Tuckahoe area at the monthly Association meeting on August 11, 2009 at L’s Restaurant in Corbin City. A total of 28 applications were received for the three separate scholarship programs.
Three students received notice of awards from the James and Martha Owens scholarship fund. The Owen’s established the scholarship fund about 12 years ago to recognize high school seniors from the Tuckahoe area who were continuing their education. This year’s recipients are Jack Stephenson, Cody Letsinger and Brandon Klein. Each will receive $650 at the end of the first semester
Additionally, the Greater Tuckahoe Area Merchants’ Association created a scholarship program for students who are already enrolled in college. The three recipients for this scholarship program are Karly Trout, Amy Rogers and Laura Brown. Each will receive $650.
A total of $4000 is being awarded this year.
Proceeds from the canoe race, fall extravaganza, Christmas in the Country, and
town dances are the primary funding sources.
This year a new scholarship program has been established from the estate of local resident Doris C. Stowell. A $5000 award is to be given to a high school senior from the Greater Tuckahoe Area who meets certain criterion and is continuing their education. The award will be given to Danielle Parsons at the end of her first year of college.
