Greater Tuckahoe Area Merchants’ Association Scholarship programs

The Greater Tuckahoe Area Merchants’ Association (G.T.A.M.A.) is offering educational scholarships to full-time students who reside within the geographic boundaries of the Association and meet certain eligibility requirements. One of requirements is to volunteer at our fund raising events. Typically we will hold the Tour-de-Tuckahoe; The Canoe- Kayak- Paddle Board Races and the Poker Run, and the Professional Craft Show.

Since 1998 the Association has awarded approximately $185,000 to more than 103 students from the Greater Tuckahoe Area. There are 2 separate programs. One is for graduating high school seniors, and the second is for students already enrolled in college. The Association, in cooperation with local sponsors, has 5 scholarships for the high school seniors and 2 for those in college.

As in the past, the Association is accepting applications from high school seniors for the James and Martha Owens and the Alex and Virginia May Scholarships. This year the number of scholarships for the James and Martha Owens will be determined by the number of applicants and the amount of the scholarships will be set later but will be a minimum of $250.

The Alex and Virginia May Scholarship is up to $1000 and is for students who will attend or are attending a community college and who have been active in the events of the G.T.A.M.A.

The Owens and May scholarships for the high school seniors will be awarded after successful completion of the first college semester and providing the scholarship committee a copy of their transcript.

In its second year is the B and G Scholarship.  One male and one female high school senior that meets special criteria are selected as the recipients. The B and G scholarship is $2000 each payable at the end of the school year upon receiving a copy of the transcript plus the courses for the next semester.

Also in its second year is a scholarship for individuals entering one of the trades.  The LC Equipment, Inc. offered a scholarship to a graduating high school senior who has been accepted into a technical program or trades journeyman of their choice.

A new scholarship for high school seniors is provided by Marjorie and Stoddard Bixby for a female and a male student enrolled in one of the S.T.E.M. disciplines. The award is $1000 each.

The deadline for submission to the applications for high school seniors is March 30.

Post-Secondary students
The G.T.A.M.A. Scholarships for those full-time students already in college have the same geographic boundaries and must maintain at least a “B” GPA.  Post-Secondary recipients may reapply and receive a scholarship up to three times (a total of four years). Currently we have two programs.
Greater Tuckahoe Area Merchants’ Association Scholarship
This year the number of scholarships for the G.T.A.M.A. scholarship will be determined by the number of applicants and the amount of the scholarships will be set later.
Roland Bonner Memorial S.T.E.M. Scholarship
In memory of Roland Bonner the Association has established a scholarship program for a female and a male student enrolled in one of the S.T.E.M. disciplines. The award is $1000 each.

The submission deadline for applications for these two post-secondary programs is May 18.
