Greater Tuckahoe Area Merchants’ Association Scholarship programs
The Greater Tuckahoe Area Merchants’ Association presented scholarship awards to 20 students from the Greater Tuckahoe area at the monthly Association meeting on July 10, 2012 at L’s Restaurant in Corbin City.
Six students received notice of awards from the James and Martha Owens scholarship fund. The Owen’s established the scholarship fund about 15 years ago to recognize high school seniors from the Tuckahoe area who were continuing their education. This year’s recipients are Joe Devine, Sarah Meloy, Megan Norton, Kieran Keyser, Elizabeth Davis and Patrick Birk . Each will receive $1000 at the end of the first semester.
In its third year, a scholarship program was established in memory of Alex and Virginia May for a high school senior who will attend an area Community college. This year’s recipient of $1000 is Kylie Green payable at the end of the first semester.
A scholarship was established from the estate of local resident Doris C. Stowell. A $5000 award is to be given to a high school senior from the Greater Tuckahoe Area who meets certain criterion and is continuing their education. The award will be given to Garrett Terwilliger at the end of his first year of college.
Additionally, the Greater Tuckahoe Area Merchants’ Association created a scholarship program for students who are already enrolled in college. The twelve recipients for this scholarship program are Jack Stephenson, Cody Letsinger, Amy Rogers, Heather Terwilliger, Mark Norbury, Stephen Campbell, Emma Elmer, Raymond Wright, Kaitlyn Rupert, Kelly Rupert, Colin Norton, Jillian Huber. Each is receiving $1000 or $500 depending on whether they volunteered at our events.
A total of $22,500 is being awarded this year.
Proceeds from the Tour-de-Tuckahoe bike ride, the Greater Tuckahoe Area Merchant's Association Canoe and Kayak race, Christmas in the Country, and town dances are the primary funding sources plus the bequests from the Martha and James Owens and Doris C. Stowell estates and from the May family.
